Made with Garbanzo beans a.k.a Chick Peas a.k.a. Chenna (Hindi word)– makes 2-3 servings.
There are a million variations of this recipe. It’s pretty much found everywhere in India and is a classic Indian dish. Goes good with Indian Rice and yogurt/curd.
You will Need:
1 cup of garbanzo beans/chenna washed and soaked overnight in water then boiled a pressure cooker with 1 cinnamon stick until tender approx. 30 minutes OR use 2 cans of garbanzo beans, and wash thoroughly
2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil (can substitute with oil of your choice)
1/2 Tablespoons Chenna Masala
2 teaspoons Chat Masala
2-3 cups of Water
Heat 2 Tablespoons oil in pot
Add 1/2 Tablespoon chenna masala and 2 teaspoons of chat masala
Add the whole cooked chenna and 2-3 cups water to pot
Mash some of the cooked chenna (this helps thicken the gravy)
Cook for 15-20 minutes on medium-high heat
Garnish with coriander leaves
*Chat masala and chenna masla are available at ethnic grocery stores and some major grocery store chains.
You’ll notice that this is a very basic and forgiving Indian chick peas recipe. Adjust spices and feel free to add onions, tomatoes or other veggies as you desire! Be creative and enjoy your meal!
